Understanding Foreign Languages
By
There are few things that can be as useful as a foreign language under the right circumstances, and by practicing before putting yourself in a situation where the language would be most a utility, you can be easily amused with the results and how quickly it can take you to get used to another language. Those fluent enough can often be mistaken for natives when speaking, but only in the eyes of another tourist it may seem, this is not always the case however. There may be many ways to begin understanding what the various pronunciations mean, or even how the different accents and enunciations come into play when speaking.

GUESS THE COMMONEST WORDS.
This is both frustrating and fun. Type in English words you think might be among the 100 most common, and if you're right, the world will appear in its box. Note that if you start typing in a three-letter word that happens to start with a two-letter word, the latter will appear instead, but you can then go back and start typing again and it will accept the longer word (if, of course, it's on the list). Warning: I'm pretty sure the list is flawed, because some of the words I (and people on the MetaFilter thread where I found it) tried have to be more common than a few of the ones they include. It can be difficult to get the swing of a particular kind of language, but through intensive study, it may best be possible to understand the best way to say the words without seeming like a completely foolish tourist feeling.
If you choose to figure out a foreign language to further perhaps your own interests in other cultures, or even just for the enjoyment that you might receive from understanding how another language works, you may find that a foreign language can give you a good foundation with which to learn more languages. If you find it an enthusiastic challenge to figure out the foreign language of your choice, then you may be interested in learning the write in said language as well, and that can be quite difficult indeed in many varying cases. The choice is yours, if you can find the time, to pick any language of millions of different dialects of communication.
